The Pan-Asian Screen Collective (P-ASC) launched in August 2018 to represent, provide advocacy and facilitate opportunities for Pan-Asian screen practitioners on and behind New Zealand’s screens. As of 2022, P-ASC’s 800+ -strong membership continues to climb.
P-ASC represents screen practitioners of Pan-Asian heritage including those from long-established New Zealand Chinese and Indian communities. It also includes members from migrant and refugee communities.
P-ASC aims to:
- Foster career pathways for emerging and established Pan-Asian talent through training, coaching, networking, accessing funding, building confidence and celebrating difference.
- Facilitate paid work opportunities for Pan-Asian talent in the screen industries including in front of and behind cameras, in key creative roles, telling stories.
- Reflect contemporary Aotearoa by improving Pan-Asian representation on and behind screens.
- Resist a monolithic or stereotyped definition of Asianness or Asian stories.
- Ensure that Pan-Asian screen practitioners get to define Asianess or Asian stories.
Activities that P-ASC has undertaken have included:

Shuchi Kothari
Writer
The first Kiwi-Indian screenwriter to pen and produce an NZFC-funded feature film (Apron Strings), Shuchi Kothari writes and produces for film and television in New Zealand and India. She also heads the screen production programme at the University of Auckland and is currently writing an animated feature film set in Japan and USA.
Roseanne Liang
Director, Writer
Roseanne’s debut feature My Wedding and Other Secrets is the most successful NZ-Asian feature film to date. She has also made award-winning work across documentary, short film and TV comedy including Berlin-winning short Take 3, and hit web series Flat3. Tipped by the Hollywood Reporter as one to watch, she is currently pursuing feature opportunities in the States.
Selina Joe
Producer, Director
As an independent filmmaker, Selina has completed documentaries on bullying, Lapita archaeology, and Tourette’s syndrome. Most recently, Selina managed 40 cast and crew at Stone St Studios for Lisa Reihana’s 3D short film.
Megan Blackwell
General Manager
As a NZ born Chinese creative, Megan has always felt the push and pull of living as a proud New Zealander and trying to honour my Asian heritage. She completed AUT’s BCS extended major in Digital Media and went on to work in local actuality TV as a motion graphics artist.
Johnny Hui
General Manager
Johnny has been fortunate and blessed to work in the vibrant and colourful museums and arts sector at Auckland Museum, Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland Arts Festival in leadership roles in education, volunteering and public engagement.
Gilbert Wong
Communications and Media Practitioner
Gilbert Wong is an experienced writer and communications professional. He has held senior roles in journalism and communications, including as the Director of Communications at Auckland DHB, Research Communications Manager at the University of Auckland and as a senior writer and editor for the New Zealand Herald, Metro magazine.
Andrew Yee
Treasurer
A Chartered Accountant who for the past 30 years has worked in a number of industries from Sports Stadiums to Internet Start-ups, Telecommunications, Financial services, and IT. I have been fortunate to work alongside wonderful people with vision, business acumen and a care for others and the local community and I will do my best to bring these qualities to my role as P-ASC treasurer.
